39th (Dorsetshire) Regiment of Foot, Victorian Officer's shoulder belt plate.. A splendid rare gilt example. Rectangular plate, seeded and with burnished edges, mounted with silver star in turn mounted with crowned pierced strap '39th or Dorsetshire' on a blue enamel ground. Centrally, on light green translucent enamel ground, gilt Gibraltar Castle and Key with a scroll 'Montis Insignia Calpe'. Above the star, a gilt scroll 'Primus In Indis'; below the star, a number of ornate battle honour scrolls. Reverse retains original fixings, comprising two hooks at the top and two studs at the bottom and complete with leather liner. VGC (Parkyn 316).
