3rd Bn Duke of Edinburgh’s (Wiltshire Regiment), Victorian Officer’s glengarry badge circa 1881-97.
A fine and scarce die-stamped example. Large gilt cross pattée, the arms lined, the top one bearing the honour “Mediterranean”. To the centre, within a circlet “The Wiltshire Regiment”, the coronet within the cypher of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. Two loops to reverse. Complete with backing plate. Minor service wear. VGC
With origins in four regiments, it was reorganised as The Wiltshire Militia 8th November 1758; redesignated Royal Wiltshire Militia 29th June 1841 at Marlborough. Under Cardwell’s reforms, on Friday 1st July 1881, it became 3rd Bn. Wiltshire Regiment. Awarded the honour “Mediterranean” in 1856 for garrison duties performed during the Crimean War
