Autograph letter signed from Anthony Pasquin [pseud. of John Williams] (1761-1818), notable satirist, writer, theatre critic, and poet. Written, in verse, to his friend Taylor, from 125 Strand dated 30th Oct. 1790: "I request my friend Taylor you instantly tell me, (as I trust you have been to the Strand where they sell me, for e'en I like the chiefs of the land may be bought, tho 'tis surely not doing the thing that I ought), what you think of my portrait? I ask this of you, as a prop to the Muses - to taste and virtu; have they made me too handsome, too young or too old? Are the features too soft? Is the contour too bold?...", 16 x 18cm, archival tape closed short tears._ Together with: A Probationary Ode for the Laureatship (sic) by George Keate, actually an acerbic parody of the poet George Keate, frontispiece is an etching caricature of Keate as a dog, drawn in the style of Gillray; folio 27 x 22cm, re-bound sympathetically in half morocco with marbled boards, some professional restoration with archival repairs at foot of frontispiece and half-title, invisible archival tape, and possibly some professional cleaning at bottom corners which has left some patchy discolouration, bound together with The Children of Thespis [Anthony Pasquin], part 1, First edition, 1786; part 2, 3rd edition, 1788; part 3, 2nd edition, 1788 - The Lamentations of Edmund the Martyr [Anthony Pasquin], First edition, 1786 - The Contest of Divinity, Law, Physic, &c. for the Prize of Infamy by Timothy Pheon, First edition, 1789 - The Deserter A Poem by A Young Lady, First edition, 1788; very scarce._ PASQUIN, Anthony. We are not professional packers or shippers but do our utmost to pack items in a correct way which will ensure items arrive safely. However, Hansons Auctioneers will not be held responsible for making any claim. We may be able to make claims with Royal Mail or Parcelforce but cannot guarantee this.

There are some items that, due to their nature, size or weight, we cannot post out. However, we can recommend couriers and you can arrange for them to pick the item up from our saleroom/ London Office. They will also be able to insure some items which we are unable to insure.

Terms and Conditions of Business for Buyers

Care is taken to ensure that any statements as to authorship, attribution, origin, date, age, provenance and condition are reliable and accurate, but all such statements are statements of opinion and are not to be taken as statements or representations of fact. Hansons reserve the right, in forming their opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority reasonably considered by them to be reliable. All clients are advised they are entering into a contract with Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers under English Law and Jurisdiction.

1. The Buyer 
The highest bidder to be the buyer. If any dispute arises, the auctioneer shall have absolute discretion to settle it and to put any disputed lot up again for sale. 

2. Buyer Identification 
Buyers are requested to furnish references in advance of the sale in order to avoid delay in clearing purchases. Goods will not be cleared until such references have been processed or cheques cleared. Hanson’s reserve the right not to approve any online bidder when their registration credit check is not successful and who cannot provide references. Hansons will not accept commission bids for any buyer that has an outstanding invoice. 

3. Buyer’s Premium 
The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a buyer’s premium at the rate of 25% (plus VAT where applicable). Please note that there is a minimum purchase charge of £6 plus VAT. Internet bidding incurs an additional 3% plus VAT charge. 
VAT is charged on Hansons' services NOT on the goods and is payable at the standard rate set by the UK government. 
Any royalties eligible to be paid to a qualifying artist under the ‘Droit de Suite’ legislation will be added to the buyers invoice

4. Payment 
Immediately on the fall of the hammer, all lots shall be at the sole risk and expense of the respective purchasers 
All Bidders need to pay and arrange collection within 5 working days of the auction.
Failure to pay for goods within six weeks of the auction will result in the sale being rescinded. The defaulting buyer will also be blocked from bidding at future Hansons auctions.

5. Methods of Payment 
Cash, debit / credit card (via email payment request if not in person) or direct bank payment. 
Personal cheques will only be accepted at the discretion of Hansons Accounts and on the understanding that NO goods will be released until bank clearance of the cheque has completed. 

6. Collection / Shipment of Goods

All items must be collected in a timely manner or storage charges may be levied as our space is very limited.
All buyers / couriers must check their purchases prior to departure from the collection point. Hansons will accept no claims for loss or damage thereafter. 

 

7. Third Party Liability 
Every person at Hansons Auctions shall be deemed to be there at his own risk. They shall have no claim against Hansons in respect to any accident which may occur or injury, damage or loss howsoever caused. 

8. Rights of Admission 
The right is reserved to refuse admission to the auction premises and may be used by Hansons without giving a reason. 

9. Selling Rate 
This is a timed auction with an interval of 5 minutes between each lot. NB. Any bids left in the final moments will automatically generate a 5-minute extension (ensuring a fair opportunity is given to counter-bidders), so you'll need to follow the revised end times accordingly. Please follow your lots closely as the closing time will adjust in order to provide all bidders with an opportunity to come back. We recommend entering your maximum bid in good time, rather than leaving it until the last moment and prolonging the sale unnecessarily.
