Florence Nightingale (1820-1910). An archive of signed correspondence and related material for
Autograph Letter Signed in black ink on four sides, London, 7 May 1892. "My dear Miss de Laney, I do indeed feel deeply interested in your plans, as you know. Sorry I am that you should be thinking of leaving Birmingham & Miss Gibson, & the good work you have been doing there, yet I cannot be sorry that you should have promotion which you have well earned if you wish it. I think the post at Ventnor is rather a hard one...I do not think the difficulty of the post is lessened by so many of the patients being up & out of doors. But I do not for a moment doubt that you will master (or mistress) the situation if you are appointed. And I assure you you have my best wishes that you should succeed. God bless you & your work. Yours ever sincerely, Florence Nightingale." Clean & bright, fold-lines as posted, splitting to fold-lines.
Two ALS in pencil, 10 South Street, Park Lane letterhead, each dated 30 April 1897. 1. "My dear Miss de Laney, Are you still at the Epileptic Colony? I have wished to see you for so long. But I have just heard that another lady was applying for the post. Have you resigned? The severe pressure of constant work & ill health has prevented me from writing. Ever yours sincerely, Florence Nightingale." 2. "Would you kindly forward this letter to Miss de Laney - and would you be so good as to let me know where she is? Florence Nightingale. Excuse pencil. To the Secretary or Supt. of the Colony for Epileptics." Complete with two hand-addressed envelopes, one marked "Private" and dated 30 April 1897, the other (postal cover only) marked "To be forwarded". Both letters with fold-lines as posted, some pale spotting, otherwise well-preserved.
ALS in pencil on two sides, 10 South Street, Park Lane letterhead, 5 May 1897. "My dear friend Miss de Laney, God speed you: and He will speed you. I grieve that you were obliged to resign & that you so much need rest. But you have done a good work & you will do much more good work for our cause, tho' I wish you could have carried on with the Epileptics. Yours anxiously & hopefully & ever affectionately, F. Nightingale. You must be very busy now: but I shall hope to hear from you when you leave & where you go. F.N." Fold-lines as posted, some pale spotting, otherwise well-preserved.
ALS in pencil on four sides, 10 South Street, Park Lane letterhead, 7 June 1897. "My dear Miss de Laney, I cannot tell you how grieved I am at your grief & distress. With regard to your undertaking a Home Hospital, what enquiries have you made as to the call for a Hospital or Home Hospital for 1st Class Epileptic Patients? & its prospect of success? Do you know Mr Burford Rawlings, the Secy. of the National Hospital, Queen's Square, who might be able to give advice? Mr Bonham Carter (whom I asked) does not know him, but he has been a Donor & would give an introduction. Mr Bonham Carter would also recommend your asking opinion of Dr 'Goulis' (I cannot quite read the name, but you will probably know) & Dr Buzzard if you have any basis to go upon. Excuse pencil & brevity. I sympathise with you always - & hope to see you soon. But we have been so overwhelmed with business, & still are that I have not one 1/2 hour to myself. But I do sympathise with the poor Epileptics at the Colony who have you no longer. Ever yours affectionately, F. Nightingale." Very well-preserved, fold-lines as posted, a few tiny spots.
