A Cased .450 (40-Bore Black Powder Express) Percussion Two-Groove Sporting Rifle By J. Purdey, 314½ Oxford Street, London, No. 6031 For 1861. With browned damascus twist sighted barrels each rifled for a belted ball, matted along the rib between the breeches and towards the fore-sight, and signed in full forward of the folding leaf-sights from '100' to '200' yards, each leaf with central platinum line. Border engraved breeches each with short platinum line and pierced platinum plug engraved with a rosette, and decorated with symmetrical foliage on the flat between. Case-hardened tang engraved with symmetrical scrolling foliage, signed border engraved case-hardened serial numbered detented flat locks each decorated with foliate scrollwork and stamped with lockmaker's initials 'J.G' on the inside. The mechanisms retaining their case-hardened and burnished finish, dolphin hammers decorated en suite and each with blued safety-catch in front. Highly figured half-stock with cheek-piece, chequered grip and forend, border engraved steel mounts decorated with foliate scrollwork and comprising chequered butt. Serial numbered trigger-guard retaining some blueing and with chequered spur, trigger-plate with long slender finial decorated with two flower-heads, and hinged circular case-hardened patch-box cover with a flower-head centred on a circular arrangement of scrolling foliage within a border of repeated flowering foliage. Engraved barrel-bolt escutcheons, sling mounts (ramrod missing), and retaining some original finish.
In associated partly relined and refitted brass-mounted oak case with some accessories including Sykes patent white-metal mounted powder-flask with bag-shaped body covered in black pigskin, and in fine condition, brass bullet mould serial numbered to the rifle, steel sprue-cutter, reproduction powder magazine painted black and 'Improved Rifle Powder.' in gilt, and with reproduction bullet swedge and two wooden bullet-starters, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label (damage), the exterior with circular vacant brass escutcheon centred on a flush-fitting circular brass carrying handle, London proof marks

Dallas, p. 192 - Henry John Reynolds-Moreton, 3rd Earl of Ducie (1827-1921), styled Lord Moreton between 1840 and 1853, was a courtier and Liberal Party politician. He served as Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard between 1859, the year he was admitted to the Privy Council, and 1866, and as Lord Warden of the Stannaries in Cornwall between 1888 and 1908. He lived at Tortworth Court, Gloucestershire, built between 1848 and 1853, and during the course of his life he spent much of his time acquiring unusual and exotic plants from around the world to plant in the grounds.

Books and Accessories: Standard UK Mainland shipping starts from £10.00 per parcel.

Overseas Deliveries
For overseas customers, we work with two international couriers who can handle export paperwork. Buyers are responsible for complying with all relevant import regulations, and any duties, taxes, or customs charges incurred. Costs dependent on destination, weight, dimensions and value. We are more than happy to offer quotes.
Storage charges may apply for items not collected or shipped within 21 days of the auction end date.

Terms & Conditions of Bidding
1. Registration
All prospective bidders must register before placing bids. By registering and
bidding in the sale, bidders agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.
2. Buyer’s Premium
A buyer’s premium of 17.83% (plus VAT where applicable) will be added to the
hammer price of each lot. Additional platform surcharges may apply for online
bidding via The Saleroom or other bidding platforms.
3. Payment Terms
Payment is due in full within 5 working days of the auction’s conclusion.
Accepted payment methods include bank transfer, debit/credit card, cash (up to
legal limits). Items will not be released until payment has been received and
cleared in full.
4. Collection & Shipping
See delivery tab for full details of shipping and collections. Storage charges may
apply for items not collected or shipped within 21 days of the auction end date.
5. Condition of Lots
All lots are sold as seen and as described to the best of our knowledge. We do
not offer warranties or guarantees. Buyers are encouraged to satisfy themselves
as to the condition, age, and authenticity of items prior to bidding. Condition
reports are available on request but are provided as a guide only.
6. Description & Cataloguing
While every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of descriptions, all statements
in the catalogue or elsewhere are the opinion of the auctioneer or seller and are
not to be taken as definitive or legally binding.
7. Title & Risk
Title to the lot passes to the buyer upon full payment. Risk passes at the point of
collection or dispatch. We are not liable for damage or loss once the item has
left our possession.
8. Non-Payment or Non-Collection
If payment is not received within the stated period, or goods are not collected
or arranged for shipping within 21 working days, we reserve the right to charge
storage fees and/or re-offer the item in a future sale, with the buyer remaining
liable for any shortfall.
9. Firearms & Restricted Items
Where applicable, all firearms, antique weapons, or other regulated items will
be sold in accordance with current UK legislation. Proof of eligibility (e.g. valid
licence or exemption) will be required before collection or shipping.
10. General
We reserve the right to withdraw lots, refuse bids, or cancel sales at our
discretion. Bidding increments are determined by the auctioneer or platform
and are final.
