PROVENANCE WINDSOR CASTLE GEORGE IV ROSEWOOD BOOKCASE
the superstructure surmounted by a pierced gallery rail, raised aloft by ormolu scrolled supports over a finely figured top, the piece fitted with two leather lined shelves set in place with adjustable sawtooth mounts, flanked by acanthus carved pilasters featuring receded scrollwork, terminating in a moulded-rim plinth base, 132 x 117 x 39cm, incised verso “ G.R.(IV), No. 17” along with inventory marks reading “V.R., 1866, Windsor Castle, Room 305”, which, according to the Royal Collection Trust, is a sitting room on the ground floor of Victoria Tower, listed in “For the King’s Pleasure: the furnishing and decoration of George IV’s apartments at Windsor Castle” by Hugh Roberts, as the Lord Steward’s Drawing Room, together with documentation relating to the item’s sale by Gerald Dillon Antiques, Bath, UK, in 1973

Fair - excellent patina; section of plain moulded trim missing from one side; small sections of veneer along rim of same side missing; signs of replacement sections of veneer along rim; shallow abrasions to leather shelf panelling and bottom timber shelf; some faint stains and shallow wear to both top and upper shelf; some light tarnishing to ormolu scrolled supports; other superficial wear consistent with age
