Première édition corrigée et augmentée des annotations et corrections de Michel Servet sur la traduction de Sanctis Pagnini. Cet ouvrage fut mis à l'index en raison du commentaire controversé jugé "hérétique" formulé par Servet. Ce dernier fut finalement arrêté, à la demande de Calvin, jugé et exécuté pour ses opinions antitrinitaires.

Ouvrage signé de la signature de Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553-1617). Magistrat, juriste, homme d'État, historien, humaniste et bien sûr bibliophile, il est connu pour son importante bibliothèque savante et encyclopédique constituée d'un peu plus de 10 000 titres.

Charmant exemplaire à la provenance d'autorité et relié aux pièces d'armes de la famille Rohan-Soubise

Folio. Bound in full light brown calf, spine with raised bands, gilt-tooled and decorated with repeated crowned armorial devices (lozenge and ermine spots), double gilt fillet to board edges. Housed in a modern slipcase. (Contemporary binding). [6] ff., 269 pp. (numbered 267), [39] ff.
Decorated with a woodcut title ornament and historiated initials; printed in two columns.

First revised and expanded edition incorporating the annotations and corrections by Michael Servetus on the Latin translation of Sanctes Pagninus. This edition was placed on the Index due to the controversial and ultimately condemned theological commentary by Servetus, later arrested at Calvin’s request and executed for his anti-Trinitarian views.

A highly desirable copy with notable provenance, bearing the autograph signature of Jacques Auguste de Thou (1553–1617), magistrate, jurist, statesman, historian, humanist and one of the most celebrated bibliophiles of early modern Europe. His scholarly and encyclopaedic library once comprised over 10,000 volumes.

An appealing example bearing the armorial binding of the Rohan-Soubise family.

With three manuscript ex-libris inscriptions: “Jaq. Aug. Thuani” (Jacques Auguste de Thou), “Ramuel”, and the armorial bookplate of Shute Barrington, Bishop of Durham.

Binding:
Some restorations, notably to the headcaps, corners, and joints, with a matte patina used to blend repairs.
Joints split with visible older restorations; slight fragility to the upper board joint.
Leather along the joints somewhat cracked in places, with minor superficial scuffing.
Modern slipcase in good condition.

Interior:
Light and localised water staining to the margins of some leaves, particularly at the beginning of the volume, including the title-page.
A few scattered foxing spots, more noticeable on the title-page.
Some leaves show mild oxidation.
Minor soiling in places.
Old, small creases visible, notably on the title-page.
