Rutherford, Daniel (1749-1819)
Manuscript notebook containing clinical reports on patients at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, 1796
8vo (21 x 13cm), [2] 74, [2] 65 pp., written in ‘tête-beche’ format with female cases at front and male at rear, each section starting with index on the relevant endpaper with headings ‘Age’, ‘Name, 'Diseases' and ‘Event’ (i.e. outcome), with each case being divided into daily reports, front free endpaper with title ‘Vol. 5., Clinical Reports, Dr Rutherford. From February 1st to April 1796’ on recto, bookplate of William Woolcombe M.D. to front pastedown, bound in contemporary calf-backed marbled boards with vellum tips, spine label (with minor loss) reading ‘Clinical Reports Rutherford’; together with another manuscript (4to, 268 pp., containing two works: ‘Essay on the Physiology of the Nervous Sister by R Wisemann, surgeon, Cupar, read before the society Jan 12th 1827’, and ‘Essay on Paralysis read befor the Society 5 July 1827 by Alexr Reid, surgeon, Markinch’, later pencilled annotation to endpaper identifying work as ‘Essays of the Fife Med. Chirurgical Society Vol. II 1827’) (2)
Daniel Rutherford was a Scottish physician and chemist best remembered for his 1772 dissertation De aere fixo dicto aut mephitico, considered the first written account of nitrogen. He was appointed physician-in-ordinary to the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, in 1791. Given the variation in the hand from one day to the next, this volume of clinical reports appears to have been compiled on the spot, rather than being recorded from dictation in extended sittings after the fact. The cases of 37 women and 30 men are described, with ailments including cattarhus, ascites, typhys, chorea, variola, apoplexia hydrocephalica, cephalagia, dyspepsia, diabetes, amentia, caligo, amenorrhea, and mania, the outcomes including ‘cure’, ‘relief’, ‘no relief’, ‘dismissed', and ‘death’. Two similar manuscripts are held by the University of Edinburgh in their Archive and Manuscript Collections, each in a distinct hand, though both in a regular italic style distinct from that of the present volume: ‘Clinical cases of Dr. Rutherford and Dr. Gregory, November 1793’ (shelfmark Coll-1326); and ‘Clinical Cases by Daniel Rutherford, Physician, Edinburgh, 1797', which is one part of a three-part notebook (shelfmark Coll-261 Dc.7.117).
