Note: Derek Carruthers was a well-known painter, sculptor, maker of constructions, reliefs and mobiles. His earlier work was mainly abstract and later it became more figurative, often compositions with a focus on lay figures. He was also a noted art teacher, firstly at Sunderland College of Art 1957-64 before being appointed Head of Fine Art at Nottingham Trent in 1973. He was born at Penrith in Cumbria and studied art at King’s College, Newcastle University 1953-57, where his teachers included Victor Pasmore and Lawrence Gowing. Derek Carruthers was influenced in his early career by Pasmore. He exhibited with the London Group, AIA Gallery, Young Contemporaries, John Moores Exhibitions Liverpool, and had solo shows in Newcastle 1957 and at Drian Galleries in London 1963-65. He was included in the Arts Council show ‘Construction England’ in 1963. In 2019 there was an important one-man show at Djanogly Gallery, Nottingham. His work is held in a number of public collections including Leeds Art Gallery, Leicester University, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery Bradford, and the Arts Council Collection at the Southbank Centre. Derek Carruthers lived in Nottingham.
