Artist's label verso
Note: Ronnie Smith graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1969. At that time the GSA was producing many of the best painters in the country and Smith, taught by Donaldson, Shanks and Robertson, was no exception. His work is inspired by his fascination with the Mediterranean and the Highlands of Scotland. Best known for his sweeping yet subtle landscapes, their detail picked out delicately in slight, contrasting hues, Smith is unaware of how talented he is. He is highly regarded amongst his artist friends but overbearing self-promotion and relentless focus on his image as an artist does not interest him. Instead he paints away in his Glasgow studio with dedication and modesty, totally absorbed in creating his next painting and facing the challenges it brings with integrity and creativity. Ronnie’s paintings are not scenic representations or views but are based on his individual perceptions. They are distillations of the real world with the emphasis on colour, space and structure. His awards include GSA – John and Mabel Craig Bequest; RSA – Carnegie Travelling Scholarship; GSA – Haldane Travelling Scholarship; RGI – David Cargill Award; RGI – John Cunningham Award. His work has been exhibited at prestigious galleries around the UK including The Portland Gallery (London), Lemon Street Gallery, Roger Billcliffe Gallery, Thompson's Gallery (London) and at the annual exhibitions of RSA, RSW, RGI and PAI. His known corporate and public collections include: Cunard Queen Mary II (commission), Royal Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh Fund Managers, Glasgow Museums, Leeds Education Authority, Lanarkshire Education Authority, Walter Scott & Partners and Adam & Co Bank.
