SCOTTISH GUILD OF HANDICRAFT, SET OF FOUR STENCILLED CANVAS FRIEZE PANELS, CIRCA 1905 each printed with Glasgow rose and foliate designs, on frame mountNote: The fabric used in these panels was originally part of the interior decoration for The Arcadia restaurant and tea rooms in Glasgow. The decoration was executed by the Scottish Guild of Handicraft circa 1905, whose members included John Ednie, Henry T. Wyse and a certain Charles Rennie Mackintosh. They were purchased by the current owner around a decade ago from someone who acquired them when the property was being redeveloped in the 1950s.The Arcadia is featured in The Studio - early 20th century art journal. As per page 46 of The Glasgow Style 1890-1920 (pub. Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries), '...The Guild was a Labour Co-Partnership Association and was registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act in 1903. Members held shares in the Guild, and were controlled by a committee which maintained standards by vetting their craftsmanship. The mutually supportive nature of the Guild is illustrated by the short lived Arcadian Gallery project. A J H Moffat, secretary of the Guild, was a designer and publisher's Art agent at 132 St Vincent Street. Here in 1907 Moffat and Clarke established The Arcadian Gallery, which combined a vegetarian restaurant with continuous exhibitions of contemporary art. The alterations and interior designs were by Henry T Wyse and the menu card by Jessie M King, both Guld members. This patronage was further demonstrated by Wyse who used stained glass made by John C Hall and was himself employed by the archistect Charles Soutar, both of whom were members.' 40cm high, 137cm wide Qty: 4 Overall, this lot is in good condition but shows some signs of age. The additonal images show some signs of use or storage, and the overall colour of the exterior shows age. There is some degradation to the edges, as some tacks have began to rust. The design looks strong and there no large tears or losses.
