Note: Marine artist in oil and watercolour, born in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, entirely self-taught. He served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 1934–47, retiring as a commander, and was mentioned in dispatches, HMS Broke, 1942. From 1947–63 Gardner worked as a chartered civil engineer for the Ministry of Works in Kenya. Was elected to RSMA in 1966, in 1988 being made honorary vice-president for life. Gardner’s work was featured in many marine painting reference books. He took part in group shows of the Kenya Art Society, 1950–63; UA and RSMA from 1958; and from 1982 at Mystic Maritime Gallery in America, and elsewhere. Had a series of solo shows at Polak Gallery from 1972. Nelson’s Ships: a Trafalgar Tribute was at Messum’s in 2005. An illustrated book with the same title, text by Ian Collins and essays on each featured vessel, accompanied the exhibition. National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth and the Bermuda Maritime Museum hold examples. Lived at Corfe Mullen, Wimborne, Dorset.
