Sandle for the British Art Medal Society, battleship in the act of sinking, Death’s head at centre, drowning sailor and serpent below, imperatrix impudens, rev. signature of the artist, 82mm, 331.60g (Attwood 39; Attwood/Powell p.29, fig. 20; The Medal 10, p.75, and 12, pp.61-4; BM Acq. 1983-7, p.85, 177; cf. At the time this medal caused considerable controversy, with the couplet imperatrix impudens [shameless Empress] linked to a characteristic hectoring pose of a death’s head intended to be associated with Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013), Prime Minister at the time of the Falklands War. The General Belgrano, an Argentine light cruiser, was torpedoed and sunk by the Royal Navy submarine Conqueror on 2 May 1982, with the loss of 323 lives
