Rice, C.M.G., Lagos Hausa Force and West Africa Medical Service, later Principal Medical Officer, Sierra Leone and the Gold Coast, and Director of the Medical and Sanitary Service, Nigeria East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, 1897-98 (Surgn. T. E. Rice, Lagos. Hausa. Force.); Africa General Service 1902-56, 1 clasp, N. Nigeria 1903 (Dr. T. E. Rice. W.A.M.S.) mounted as worn; together with the related miniature awards, these similarly mounted, minor edge bruising, very fine (2) £400-£500 --- C.M.G. London Gazette 1 January 1921: Thomas Edmund Rice, Esq., Director of the Medical and Sanitary Service, Nigeria. Thomas Edmund Rice was educated at the Perse School, Cambridge, and King’s College, London. Appointed a House Surgeon, King’s College Hospital, London, in 1895, he was appointed Assistant Colonial Surgeon, Lagos, in 1897, and served as a Surgeon with the Lagos Hausa Force in the Lagos Hinterland and Southern Borghu Expedition in 1897 (Medal with clasp). Appointed Senior Medical Officer, Southern Nigeria, in 1903, he saw further service during the Kano Expedition in 1903 (Medal with clasp). Appointed Senior Sanitary Officer, Gold Coast, in 1910, Rice was advanced Principal Medical Officer, Sierra Leone, in 1913, and then Principal Medical Officer, Gold Coast, in 1916. Appointed Director of the Medical and Sanitary Service, Nigeria, in 1920, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in the 1921 New Year’s Honours’ List. His final appointment was as Chief Medical Officer, Barbados. The author of ‘Evidence of the Endemicity of Yellow Fever in the Gold Coast Colony’, published in 1913, he retired n 1930, and died on 9 June 1941.
