London
Bank of Elegance, C.M’Alpine, 47 or 48 Threadneedle St, London, a series of skit notes for £50 (3), £10,000, first three dated 30 January 1821, 1822 and 1823, last dated 29 September 1823, all promising to ‘cut any Lady or Gentleman’s hair Superior to any man in England or forfeit on Demand the Sum of Fifty Pounds/Ten Thousand Pounds’, all with coat of arms at upper left and signature of C.M’Alpine, some with backing paper or mounting, third with minor damage to top margin, overall very fine and rare, a wonderful set (4 notes) Outing Unlisted £300-£400 --- Mr C. MacAlpine was in business from at least 1826 until well into the 1840s. As with many hairdressers, he also sold products relating to hair and beauty, and was well known for his ‘African Balm’, to be used after your hair was cut - exact recipe and purpose remain mysterious. The interesting change of address from 47 to 48 Threadneedle street was likely a result of the road being renumbered, rather than the business moving into the next building along!
