D.C.M. London Gazette 16 August 1917.
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At a moment where his battalion were in front of the rest of the Brigade and consequently in danger of coming under their fire, he walked calmly across the fire-swept zone about 400 yards and informed the firing line of the position of his battalion. He had previously shown the greatest skill and courage in leading his company to the attack.’
Charles Vaughan, a Travelling Salesman from Kington, Herefordshire, was born in 1891. He attested into the 1/1st (Territorial Force) Battalion, Herefordshire Regiment and served during the Great War. It is unconfirmed whether he served at Gallipoli with his battalion, and there is no record of him being awarded a 1914-15 Star. Advanced Acting Company Quartermaster Sergeant, he served in Palestine and after the award of his D.C.M., was commissioned in the field on 22 September 1917. Advanced Second Lieutenant, he was killed in action at the Third Battle of Gaza on the Khuweifie Heights on 6 November 1917 and is buried in Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel and Palestine.
Nine Distinguished Conduct Medals for the Great War were awarded to members of the Herefordshire Regiment.
