Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Orange Free State, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (192 Tpr. G. Churchill. National Scts.) a slightly later issue; Natal 1906, 1 clasp, 1906 (Cond: G. Churchill, Militia Trans. Service.) slight damage to rivets on right hand clasp carriage on QSA, otherwise very fine, the QSA rare named to the National Scouts (2) £300-£400
---
G. Churchill served with the National Scouts during the Boer War, a unit raised from surrendered Boer Burghers; referred to as hensoppers en joiners by the Boers, the hatred of the Boers still serving on Commando towards these hensoppers en joiners was fierce and the risk to a captured ‘National Scout’ was great. Retributions were reported to have ranged from summary execution to castration and flogging. However, with the name Churchill, it is perhaps little wonder that he changed sides!
Few of the Boers that fought with the British forces bothered to apply for their Queen’s South Africa medals after the end of the war. Often ostracised by their fellow Afrikaners, many preferred to forget that they had forsaken their brethren and sworn an oath of allegiance to the Crown. Of those that did claim their medals, many were named to another unit, such as Cullinan’s Horse or the Western Light Horse.
