MC. London Gazette 27 July 1918:
‘For distinguished service in connection with Military Operations in East Africa.’
William Allen served with the South African Signal Service during the Great War, and was awarded the M.C. for his services in German East Africa. For their unremitting efforts the Signal Service was praised in Despatches from General Smuts:
‘The excellent manner in which communication has been maintained throughout reflects great credit on my Signal Service, the officers and men of which, under the able control of Lieutenant-Colonel H. C. Hawtrey, R.E., have spared no efforts in overcoming the many difficulties attendant on operating in such country and on such a large front ... Great credit is due to the Signal Service for the really excellent way in which communication has been maintained. The operations have been carried on by three widely separated forces, which have each been again sub-divided into two or more columns, and this has strained resources of the Service to its furthest limits. It has only been by unremitting efforts that success has been achieved.’
