D.S.M. London Gazette 30 November 1917: ‘For services in the Battle of Jutland.’
The recommendation states:
‘In the absence of the Warrant Telegraphist on leave, was in charge of the Auxiliary W/T office during the action. He twice cleared the aerial on deck under heavy fire. Owing to damage to the main aerial, the work in the Auxiliary office was very heavy, but no signals were delayed, and all work was dealt with in a most exceptionally able manner. At one time no light or current was available, and smoke was bad, but the office continued working on the emergency set without any slip.’ (ADM137/302/162)
Edward Wilson Penney was promoted to Warrant Telegraphist on 1 July 1916.
H.M.S. Lion, Flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty, suffered a direct hit on ‘Q’ turret early in the action. A posthumous Victoria Cross was awarded to Major Hervey, R.M.L.I., who despite being mortally wounded gave the order to flood the magazine and thereby saved the battle cruiser from blowing up.
