‘For distinguished service in the Field.’

Charles William Davis was born in 1887 and attested for the West Riding Regiment on 6 September 1904. He served with them in India from 5 October 1905, and was present at the Delhi Durbar in 1911. Transferring to the Royal Horse Artillery at Ambala on 31 October 1912, he returned to the U.K. on 10 October 1914, before proceeding to the Western Front with “A” Battery, Royal Horse Artillery on 11 November 1914, and served throughout the Great War in France. For his gallantry in 1915 he was awarded the Russian Medal of St. George for Bravery Second Class in Gold.

Post-War, Davis saw further service in India from 27 January 1920 to 28 October 1921, and then in Egypt from 29 October 1921 to 29 September 1925. He was finally discharged on 10 October 1925, after 21 years and 41 days’ service, of which almost 19 years were spent soldiering overseas, his final assessment on discharge noting his military conduct as ‘Exemplary’, and noting him as ‘a most reliable and conscientious man, hardworking, sober, and has the natural knack of getting good work out of his men; he is a good horse master, a first class rifle shot, and a good organiser. During the last year he has been running the officers’ mess, and while organising a first class show he has been scrupulously honest in all his money transactions.’

Sold with the recipient’s original Regular Army Certificate of Service Red Book; Third Class Certificate of Education, dated 11 February 1907; Second Class Certificate of Education dated 22 October 1910; two testimonial letters, both dated May 1925; various postcard photographs of the recipient; and other ephemera.
