Phillip Henry Lawther was born in Islington, London on 13 August 1882, and gained his 2nd Mate’s certificate in September 1909.
Little is known of his subsequent appointments in the Great War, but by February 1918 he was serving as master of the tanker S.S. Beaumaris. On the 7th of that month, off the Longslips, Beaumaris was torpedoed on her starboard side by the U-53 and, with the exception of Lawther and a wireless operator, her crew took to her boats. They were guided to safety by the Sennen lifeboat Ann Newton, while Lawther steered the crippled Beaumaris to Whitesand Bay, where he managed to run her ashore. His courageous seamanship was duly rewarded by Lloyd’s.
