M.I.D. London Gazette 6 July 1943: ‘For bravery and skill while serving in light coastal craft on reconnaissance operations and in action with the enemy.’ Seedie’s Coastal Forces List confirms ‘M.G.B. 504 - For combined operations raids on enemy coasts.’
M.G.B. 504 was converted to a blockade runner and renamed M.V. Hopewell in May 1943, taking part in operation ‘Bridford’ - blockade running voyages from Sweden to the U.K. between October 1943 and March 1944. However, the small number of these M.G.B.s converted for these daring operations were crewed entirely by civilian sailors drawn from Hull trawlermen and officers from Ellerman Lines, sailing under the red ensign of the mercantile marine, so Signalman Westcott most likely transferred to another boat at this time, although it is not known when he joined M.T.B. 673.
D.S.M. London Gazette 3 October 1944: ‘For undaunted courage, resolution and skill during a series of actions against enemy forces while serving in Light Coastal Craft.’ Seedie’s Coastal Forces List confirms ‘M.T.B. 673 - For a series of actions with German forces in the Plymouth area in May 1944.
