Thomas Allen was born in Gravesend, Kent, in 1873 and attested there for the Royal West Kent Regiment on 20 November 1889, aged 16. He served with the 1st Battalion in India from January 1892 to March 1898, seeing active service during the operations on the Punjab Frontier. Transferring to the 2nd Battalion, he saw further service in South Africa during the Boer War from March 1900 to September 1902, and was discharged on 15 September 1902, after 12 years’ service.
Re-enlisting in his old regiment on 7 October 1914, Allen served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 23 April 1915, and served with distinction until falling ill with severe gastritis on March 1917. Admitted to 23rd Casualty Clearing Station, he died of haematemesis on 27 March 1917, and is buried at Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.
Sold with the recipient’s Mayor, Aldermen, and Burgesses of Gravesend Certificate of Honour, named to ‘Thomas Allen, Private, Royal West Kents’, in original envelope, this rare; commemorative C.W.G.C. Memorial Scroll; and copied research, including a photographic image of the recipient.

Within the UK
If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.
Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.
Shipping Exceptions
