Horace Edward Saunders served during the Second World War in H.M. Submarine P222, and was most likely killed in action when P222, on patrol off Naples, Italy, was sunk by the Italian torpedo boat Fortunale off Capri on 12 December 1942 (although the Fortunale claimed to have sunk a submarine, the sinking has never been confirmed, although this was the only submarine loss that tallies). Saunders was officially discharged dead on 21 December 1942, the date P222 was reported overdue at Algiers, and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Advanced Chief Joiner in July 1937, he saw further service during the Second World War, and was shore released in October 1945. He died in Paington on 17 March 1973.
