The original Recommendation, dated 4 June 1979, states: ‘Bombardier Dodds has had 21 years service in the Army, much of it as a Commando Gunner until he was posted to Headquarters 23 Artillery Brigade in 1973 as the Commander's driver.
This formation commands Regiments with TAVR Centres widely scattered over the country, including, for example, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Arbroath, Dundee, Liverpool, Manchester, Wolverhampton, Worcester, Newport, Cardiff and Ebbw Vale. Units train in various other parts of the country and in Germany, so it is not surprising that the Commander’s staff car averages between 30,000-35,000 miles every year.
Bombardier Dodds is a superb driver, skilful, safe, courteous, resourceful, possessing uncanny navigating ability and seemingly endless reserves of stamina. He treats his duty as a vocation, giving every task careful and intelligent preparation; concerning himself with details of the route, timings, arrangements during the journey and on arrival to a standard worthy of an experienced staff officer. In addition to his main duty, Bombardier Dodds manages and administers the other vehicles in the Headquarters, always with commendable efficiency. He is an excellent instructor and is often called upon to teach drivers up to heavy goods vehicle standard. He finds himself involved, in many Garrison social and charity functions at which his cheerful personality, attention to detail and smartness as a soldier is a tremendous advertisement for the Army and his Regiment. He often works extremely long hours, yet always seems to have the time to do something more. He is a totally unselfish person whose way of life is consideration for others.
His personal standards are very high. He takes immense pride in his career an a soldier, is a gregarious, down-to-earth, humorous man, simple in his tastes, kind and generous to everyone. He has become the doyen of staff car drivers, setting an outstanding example.
Bombardier Dodds’ admirable performance over the years and especially recently amounts to devotion to duty of a high order. He leaves the Service in 1980.’
Henry Bramwell Dodds attested into the Royal Artillery and completed the All Arms Commando Course at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines, subsequently serving with 29 Commando, Royal Regiment of Artillery. He served during the Borneo and Malay Peninsula campaigns and saw further service in Northern Ireland before his appointment as the Garrison Commander’s Driver at Chester from 1973, for which he was later awarded the British Empire Medal. He appears to have been advanced Warrant Officer, Class 2, before his retirement in 1980. He died in May 2013.
