ALGERIA, Algérie de toujours [Algeria Forever], 1962, a cast bronze medal by P. Belmondo, female bust right in the style of a Roman empress, rev. horse leaping to left, ifrika above, edge impressed bronze and cornucopia, 81mm, 280.36g (CGMP p.131; Escande 397; cf. Nomisma 66, 526; cf. Elsen 150, 1806; cf. iNumis MBS 48, 1343). Practically as struck, traces of antique green patina, rare; in red fitted case of issue £70-£90
---
Provenance: DNW Auction 38, 25 November 1998, lot 663; bt Simmons.
In 1962 Algeria gained its independence from France after a long and brutal war. A referendum on self-determination, held in July of that year, saw an overwhelming majority of Algerians vote in favour of independence, marking the end of 132 years of French colonial rule. Given the artist’s nationality, it is no surprise that the celebrations of the time lent themselves to be commemorated by one of their own. The obverse design is taken from a bust conserved in the Musée de Cherchell, then in Mauretania; the reverse from an ancient Greek coin in the Musée de Constantine
