ITALY, Costruzione del Ponte Vecchio, Bassano [Erection of the Ponte Vecchio], 1821, a copper medal by F. Putinati, elevation of the bridge over the river Brenta, raft in foreground being rowed to left, figure with telescope at lower left, rev. legend in seven lines, 68mm, 119.27g (Turricchia 30; BDM IV, 712; cf. Bertolami 9, 1686). Very fine, scarce £60-£80
---
The origins of the Ponte Vecchio lay in the original bridge, erected early in the 13th century. Rebuilt several times after fires, floods and conflicts, the bridge was burnt down in 1813 but rebuilt on the original foundations by the architect Angelo Casarotti and re-opened in February 1821. Casarotti’s bridge was destroyed in an explosion by partisans in February 1945, but was rebuilt to its original 16th century specification in 1948
