FRANCE, Libération F.F.I., 1944, a bronze award medal by L.-G. Bazor, male street fighter standing facing, armed with a revolver and a submachine gun, in front of a Parisian crossroads littered with barricades and abandoned vehicles, rev. cross of Lorraine between laurel wreaths, un-named, edge impressed bronze and cornucopia, 68mm, 160.72g (CGMP p.112; cf. Stack’s/Bowers May 2024, 32192 for obv.; cf. BDW 13, 408 for obv.). Extremely fine, rare £60-£80

Provenance: Bt A.C. Eimer May 2007.
Libération F.F.I. (Forces Françaises de l'Intérieur), the military arm of the Resistance. After the liberation of Paris in August 1944, President Charles de Gaulle almost immediately confronted a challenge to his authority from the FFI and there was considerable unrest in the city and environs, highlighting the risks of having an armed and organised group that suddenly found itself without a mission. The FFI thought they should have a say in national power-sharing because of their contribution to the Allied war effort. De Gaulle argued that the FFI be either disbanded or integrated into the French army, and eventually the FFI backed down, recommending its members either be amalgamated into the French regular army or return to civilian life
