Provenance: BDW Auction 10, 22 February 1995, lot 479.
Sir William Henry Crundall (1847-1934), timber merchant and politician, 13-times Conservative mayor of Dover between 1886 and 1910; instigator of Dover Corporation Tramways in 1897 following a period in which many of the town’s roads were widened; chairman of Dover Harbour Board; Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, 1922; president of the Dover branch of the Conservative party. Despite the civic connection which may have spawned the award of this medal, it is presumed that Crundall was a motorist in his own right at the time, which would make this a genuinely early British motoring award
