It operated chiefly in the south-east of France, with a main line connecting Paris to the Côte d'Azur by way of Dijon, Lyon and Marseille, and was absorbed into the majority state-owned Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français in 1938. The Gare de Lyon, dating to 1855, was rebuilt to a design by the Toulon architect Marius Toudoire (1852-1922) and the new edifice, with 13 platforms, was inaugurated on 6 April 1901 by Émile Loubet, president of the Third Republic. These plaques were given to shareholders in the company at the opening of the new station
