FRANCE, Léon Labbé, 1907, a plated bronze plaque by H.-A.-J. Patey, bust right, rev. Labbé standing to right, with two observers, Léon Gosselin and Felix Hippolyte Larrey, holding up a dinner fork which he has removed from the stomach of a patient lying prone before them, wash-stand and stool at sides, edge impressed bronze and cornucopia, 70 x 56mm, 111.03g (Storer 1953; Brettauer 625; BM Acq 1978-82, p.44, 114; BDM IV, 428; cf. MDC e4, 1047; cf. Münz Zentrum Rheinland 188, 5790; cf. DNW 57, 1339). Very fine, dark-toned £50-£70
---
Léon Labbé (1832-1916), professor of surgery, Paris; Léon Athanase Gosselin (1815-87), surgeon and pioneer of andrology; Baron Felix Hippolyte Larrey (1808-95), surgeon and politician. The event shown on the plaque is a gastrotomy performed in 1874 on a M Lasseur, an employee of the newly expanded Printemps department store on Boulevard Haussmann, who, for a ludicrous lunchtime bet, swallowed a fork which he thought he could cough back up. Labbé was brought in and promptly relieved the hapless Lasseur of the fork
