A George II gold rattle by Sandilands Drinkwater, circa 1745, incorporating whistle and ‘Corallium Rubrum’ coral teething bar, chased and repoussé decorated throughout with rococo bird, C scrolls and flowerheads, supporting two tiers of four bells, the first tier suspended from the chamfered knop, the second tier mounted on double scroll supports, the mouthpiece with maker’s mark and further engraved with four sets of initials, with applied ring attachment to mouthpiece, length excluding coral teething bar 10cm, total length 14.3cm. £5,000-£7,000

Provenance: The four sets of initials are assumed to be those of subsequent generations of owners.

This example is very similar to the rattle offered at Noonans on 17 June 12025, Lot 459.


Grimwade references this hallmark as ‘probably his new style mark of 1739’, required under the 1738 Plate Act.

Condition Report
Evidence of repair at the neck below the mouth piece. Repair visible below suspensory loop, with signs of porosity to the gold. Small cracks within the goldwork visible.
Three bells mouths damaged with loss - plus further bells with cracks around the mouths.
Maker’s mark rubbed, but decipherable.

According to a PMI test on the XRF Analazer, the gold is testing as 21 - 22ct.

Gross weight 79.7gm.

If you are successful in purchasing lot/s being auctioned by us and opt for the item/s to be sent to you, we will use the following methods of shipment:

Within the UK
If you live within the UK, items will be despatched using Royal Mail Special Delivery. This service provides parcel tracking (via the Royal Mail website) and next weekday delivery (betwen 9am and 1pm). Items delivered within the UK are covered by our insurance company. Heavy and bulky lots will be sent by courier, in discussion with the client.

Outside of the UK
If the item/s being sent are worth under £1000 in total they are sent using Royal Mail’s Signed For International service. This ensures the item must be signed for when it is delivered.
If the item/s being sent are valued at over £1000 in total they will be sent using FedEx. This service allows next day delivery to customers in many parts of the US and parcels are fully trackable using the FedEx website.

Shipping Exceptions
