The mask-like face in this work recalls village clay idols and ritual masks Sen knew from his Bankura childhood, while the fractured forms and graphic brushwork reflect his interest in Cubism and European modernism. The black strokes and earth colours link back to his wider practice of combining rural craft with an abstract, modernist language.
