Sunil Madhav Sen (1910 - 1979)
Mixed Media on Paper
23 x 10 Inches
Signed Lower Right
This work shows Sen’s signature stylised figuration, a mask-like face built with bold lines and layered pattern. Its lines and earthy palette echo the folk traditions and clay sculpture that shaped his early imagination in Rarh Bengal. Born in Purulia and raised in Bankura, Sen often spoke of how the red soil and village life left a lasting imprint on his art. Inspired early on by the sculptor Ananta Patua, he began drawing idols in charcoal, roots that later evolved into his textured, symbolic portraits like this. This piece reflects Sen’s mid-career style: Cubist touches, folk influences, and a rich, worked surface grounded in Bengal’s visual culture.
