Sunil Madhav Sen (1910 - 1979)
Mixed Media on Paper/Ink on Paper
18 x 14.5/18 x 14.5 Inches
Signed Lower Right/Lower Right
Year - 1969 Verso
This work shows a male and female figure inside a bold circular frame, set against a grid of handwritten numbers resembling a Bengali folk calendar, The flattened colour and cartoon-like lines echo Kalighat paintings and patachitra scrolls, while the grid and script ground it in everyday village life. Below the main circle, a smaller panel features a miniature version of the figures, recalling how folk friezes or scrolls repeat scenes. Sen's use of local script, folk figuration, and everyday symbols shows how he transformed village and bazaar art into his own modernist idiom rooted in Bengal’s visual culture.
On the reverse, is a pen-and-ink study titled Artist & Model, dated 1969.
