Sunil Madhav Sen (1910 - 1979)
Mixed Media on Paper
13 x 8.5 Inches
Signed Lower Right
By the 1960s, Sunil Madhav Sen had moved beyond portraiture and realism, turning instead to bolder, more structured forms. This work reflects that shift. The figure—stark, frontal, and outlined in assertive lines—embodies Sen’s evolving language of figuration, shaped by his study of European modernists like Picasso and Braque, as well as his early exposure to illustrative techniques during his time at Porter Studios in Kolkata.
The angular composition and paneled effect suggest the influence of stained glass, a visual idiom Sen admired. Yet the sensibility remains rooted in Bengal—where he grew up surrounded by folk sculpture, ritual icons, and the earth-toned aesthetics of Bankura’s craft traditions.
