Sunil Madhav Sen (1910 - 1979)
Mixed Media on paper
11.5 x 5.5 Inches
This work reflects a transitional moment in Sunil Madhav Sen’s practice. The mask-like face, with high-set eyes and sculptural contouring, draws on folk iconography and modernist influences alike. Sen, who admired Picasso, who was himself inspired by African masks, reimagined these forms through the visual traditions of eastern India, particularly the ritual and folk arts of the Rarh region.
