WILKS RUA ARHA (1910 - 1984) Maurice Canning Wilks, born on 25 November 1910 in Belfast, was a landscape and portrait painter. He was educated at Malone Public School and later studied at Belfast College of Art. At the age of nineteen, he exhibited for the first time at the Royal Hibernian Academy and went on to show his work in London, Montreal, Boston, and Toronto, including numerous solo exhibitions. Wilks was an early exhibitor with the Ulster Academy of Arts and maintained his academician status when the Royal Ulster Academy was established. Later in life, he was elected an associate member of the RHA. Wilks was particularly known for his depictions of Irish landscapes, often focusing on Donegal and the West of Ireland. He was also an accomplished portraitist, with sitters including his mentor, James Humbert Craig. During the 1950s, he held several solo exhibitions at Anderson & McAuley, and in the 1960s, his work was shown in Montreal and Boston, as well as at the Magee Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery. Following his death in 1984, a retrospective of his work was presented at the Oriel Gallery.
