Title: Oliver Goldsmith and Edmund Burke (Pair) Medium: Bronze Signature: Each stamped J.H. Foley R.A. S.C: London on side of base. Also with Foundry Stamp Elkington and Co. Founders on other side of base. Notes: These Statues are Maquettes for the full-size bronzes erected at the gates of Trinity College, Dublin in 1863 and 1868. The Original plaster models are in the Birmingham City Art Gallery Provenance: Private Collection Lot Description: A pair of patinated bronze figures by John Henry Foley, depicting Oliver Goldsmith and Edmund Burke, each standing on a square base. Goldsmith is shown in mid-stride, dressed in 18th-century attire with one hand resting at his side; Burke holds an open book in one hand and gestures with the other. These works are based on Foley’s full-length statues erected outside Trinity College Dublin in the 1860s. Each figure bears impressed signature and foundry mark. Height (Incl. Base): 51 cm. (approx) Height (Without Base): 48 cm. Base Height: 3 cm. Depth: 16 cm. SCULPTURE Tuesday 16th September 2025 18:00:00 Biography JOHN HENRY FOLEY RA RHA SC (1818 - 1874) John Henry Foley was a Dublin-born sculptor of international renown, celebrated for his public monuments in Britain and Ireland, including the Daniel O’Connell Monument in Dublin and the statues of Oliver Goldsmith and Edmund Burke at Trinity College Dublin. Foley studied at the Royal Dublin Society’s School of Art before establishing a highly successful career in London. His mastery of portraiture and monumental form cemented his legacy in Victorian sculpture.
