Lot Description: A signed and dated (1790) watercolour depicting a riverside scene framed by two large mature trees, with a group of figures conversing in the foreground, one mounted, and a line of horses with riders in the middle distance. Beyond, an expansive parkland landscape opens towards a substantial country house. Executed with Paul Sandby’s characteristic balance of topographical accuracy and pastoral charm, the scene is suffused with warm light and delicate washes, with fine detailing in the foliage and figures. The composition and subject matter are typical of Sandby’s late work. Image: 41 x 60 cm.

Celebrated for his depictions of Windsor and other notable landscapes, he combined precise draughtsmanship with a naturalistic approach to light and colour.
