Image: 27 x 36 cm.; Framed: 50 x 59 cm. PICTURES AND PRINTS Tuesday 16th September 2025 18:25:50 Biography GLADYS MACCABE MBE HRUA ROI FRSA (1918 - 2018) Born in Randalstown, Co. Antrim in 1918, Gladys Maccabe studied at Belfast College of Art while also working as a journalist in fashion and the arts. Alongside her husband, fellow artist Max Maccabe, she exhibited widely, including at the Kensington Art Gallery, London (1949), the Dawson Gallery, Dublin (1949), Belfast Museum and Art Gallery (1958), and the Richie Hendriks Gallery, Dublin (1961). She was also an active member of The Contemporary Ulster Group, which included artists such as Daniel O’Neill, George Campbell, and Gerard Dillon. In 1957, together with Olive Henry, she founded the Ulster Society of Women Artists, believing that women in Northern Ireland’s art world had not been fully recognised. As the Society’s first president, she oversaw its inaugural major exhibition at the Belfast Museum and Art Gallery in 1959. Maccabe was elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1961 and went on to receive a number of accolades, including a gold medal from the Academia Italia delle Arte e del Lavoro (1979), an Honorary MA from Queen’s University Belfast (1980), honorary membership of the Royal Ulster Academy, and an MBE in 2000.
