Hanlon (1913–1968), Summertime in Deauville, watercolour on paper, signed lower left. A lively and colourful depiction of the seaside resort of Deauville, France, rendered in Hanlon’s distinctive modernist style. The composition captures promenading figures, parasols, and a vibrant shoreline with simplified forms and a joyful palette of pastel tones. The loose, rhythmic brushwork conveys a strong sense of atmosphere and summer leisure. Mounted and framed in a gilt frame with cream mount and gold slip. Image: 34 x 44 cm.; Framed: 63 x 73 cm. Hanlon was a prominent Irish modernist painter and Catholic priest, celebrated for his vibrant landscapes, coastal scenes, and religious imagery. Educated at the Royal Hibernian Academy and in Paris, his work was strongly influenced by European modernism. Hanlon’s paintings combine a joyful use of colour with bold simplification of form and have been widely exhibited in Ireland and abroad.
