A dramatic coastal scene depicting a storm-tossed vessel driven toward the rocks near a pier, with figures onshore gesturing and rushing to assist. Thornley’s bold, impasto brushwork vividly conveys the turbulence of the sea and the tension of maritime rescue. The scene is framed by dark cliffs and a brooding sky, enhancing the mood of impending peril. Housed in a rich gilt frame with name plaque. Image: 19 x 39 cm. Framed: 41 x 61 cm. He often signed his works under pseudonyms including "Thornbery" or "Lepine." Influenced by the Barbizon and Dutch marine traditions, his paintings are admired for their rich texture, strong narrative quality, and emotive depictions of nature’s power. His works are held in both UK and international collections.
