Title: The Woods Medium: Oil on Board Signature: Signed with Initials Lower Right Provenance: Private Collection Framed Lot Description: Margaret Stokes, The Woods, oil on board, initialled "MS" lower left. A small yet richly textured plein-air study of a woodland scene, focusing on the interplay of dappled light across tree trunks, moss-covered stones, and a carpet of fresh green grass. Executed in thick, impressionistic brushwork, the composition captures the quiet vitality of a forest interior with a restrained palette of greens, browns, and shadowy greys. Framed in a walnut-stained frame with cream mount. Image: 16 x 13 cm. Framed: 31 x 28 cm. PICTURES AND PRINTS Tuesday 16th September 2025 20:35:50 Biography MARGARET STOKES (1915 - 1996) Margaret Stokes was introduced to art at an early age by her cousin, the artist Mainie Jellett, who provided her with initial lessons. She went on to study at the Royal Hibernian Academy School in Dublin, where she was awarded the Purser Griffin Scholarship. This scholarship enabled her to attend the Glasgow School of Art, followed by the Edinburgh College of Art, where she studied under Joan Hassell, a noted wood engraver and illustrator, and W. G. Gillies, a respected Scottish painter. After completing her studies, Stokes returned to Dublin and began teaching at Alexa.
