Lot Description: A dramatic and poetic oil on board by Alicia Boyle, titled Before the Spring. This atmospheric composition depicts a surreal urban landscape with bare winter trees, softly illuminated rooftops, and a central red chimney rising into a star-filled night sky. The chimney’s plume bursts upward like a tree of light, conveying a mystical transition from winter into spring. Executed in Boyle’s hallmark lyrical expressionist style, with layered brushwork and glowing colour. Housed in an ornate gilt frame.

ALICIA BOYLE RBA RHA RUA (1908 - 1997)
Alicia Boyle was an Irish modernist painter known for her evocative, often mythically inspired works. Educated at the Slade School in London, her practice spanned landscapes, surreal scenes, and symbolic compositions. Boyle's work is noted for its emotional intensity, vibrant colour, and expressive handling of form. She exhibited widely in Ireland and the UK, and her works are held in national collections including the Crawford Art Gallery and the Ulster Museum.
