Schloss Frohburg, near Leipzig in Saxony was acquired in 1777 by Johann Gottfried Blümner of Leipzig, great-great-great-great uncle of the owner of the present lot.
Blümner's son, Ernst Freiherr Blümner von Frohburg (1779-1815) started the picture collection at Frohburg. Blümner maintained close contacts with numerous Saxon painters including Anton Graff ('le respectable Graff', in his diary) and Johann Friedrich August Tischbein, to both of whom he sat, and Caspar David Friedrich (see H.F. Weiss, 'Ernst Blümner und die Dresner Kunstszene in den Jahren 1805-1808, in Zeitschrift für Kunstgeschichte, vol.56, no.4, 1993, Pp.473-486).
Frohburg passed to Ernst Blümner's niece Constanze, who married Johann Paul, Freiherr von Falkenstein. This portrait belonged to the grandfather of the present owner, Friedrich Freiherr Krug von Nidda und von Falkenstein who was Prime Minister of Saxony.
