19th century A view of the Funerary Complex of Baybars al-Jashankir in Cairo, Egypt Watercolour on paper Inscribed 'Mosque at / Sultan Bebas / Cairo' lower right The minaret, portal, and mausoleum were commissioned by Baybars in 1309 after he had usurped the sultanate from al-Nasir Muhammad. This is the oldest surviving khanqah in Cairo, and the second to be built in the heart of the Fatimid city after Saladin turned the Fatimid Palace of Sa'id al-Su'ada' into a foundation for sufis.
