Oscar Nemon (Croatian, 1906-1985) Sir Winston and Lady Churchill 'Married Love' c. 1978 Bronze maquette From an edition of 15 Signed 'Nemon FNS/PJ' Croatian-born sculptor Oscar Nemon knew not only Winston Churchill but the whole Churchill family personally. Lady Churchill was introduced to Nemon by a cousin of hers, who showed her a little bust of Churchill the artist had created whilst staying at the Hotel La Mamounia, Marrakesh, at the same time as the couple in 1950. Lady Churchill declared "Your bust represents to me my husband as I see him and as I think of him", and thus began a lasting friendship between the artist and the great man, who he portrayed on numerous occasions. After Churchill's death Lady Churchill asked the artist if she could sit for him, so that he might create a dual portrait of the couple as a lasting memorial to their relationship, which she titled 'Married Love'. A life size version of the sculpture resides at their home Chartwell in Kent. Provenance: Peter AB Johnson, Trustee of the Churchill Statue Fund From the collection of Reginald and Cynthia Brown Dimensions: 9 in. (H) x 17 in. (W) x 8 in. (D)
