William Hoare (English, c. 1707-1792) Portrait of Thomas Pelham-Holles (1693-1768), 1st Duke of Newcastle Circa 1752 Oil on canvas, in a faux cartouche With old Christie's stencil verso Whig statesman Thomas Pelham-Holles was a protegé of Robert Walpole's who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain twice, the first time from 1754-56 and the second from 1757-1762. Provenance: The Dukes of Newcastle at Clumber House, Worksop; By descent to Henry Edward Hugh Pelham-Clinton-Hope Earl of Clinton, later Duke of Newcastle (1907 -1988); His sale Christie's June 14th 1937, lot 35 bt.
