Vasily Sitnikov (Russian, 1915-1987) Mother and daughter 1961 Crayon or oil on paper on board  Signed, titled and dated verso in Cyrillic Vasily Sitnikov was a legend of the Moscow underground who in 1941 was arrested, declared legally insane, and sent for compulsive psychiatric treatment. He wrote a letter addressed to the 'Ministry of Health. To the boss over all the psychiatric treatment facilities and to the boss of this boss!' which read "I PAINT FUNNY ART. NO ONE CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT ME. / I AM THE HAPPIEST PERSON IN THE WORLD. / FROM MORNING TILL NIGHT I SING SONGS WITH JOY AND EVEN DANCE / I AM DRUNK WITHOUT WINE: JUST FROM HAPPINESS!"
